Creating beeswax wraps to combat plastic packaging, Waipukurau
Young people in Waipukurau are empowering their community to reduce plastic waste.
After noticing plastic packaging plagued their school-yard bins, a group of youth in Waipukurau were inspired to provide beeswax wraps for families who might struggle to afford them. They noticed this was a barrier and wanted to help their community to better care for the environment.
The youth met weekly to produce the wraps, using beeswax donated from local company Kintail Honey. They then talked about their project with Central Hawkes Bay College during assembly and distributed the wraps to students during lunchtime.
The wraps can be re-used, and they replace the need for plastic packaging in school lunches. The wraps are a small step in a more sustainable direction, but also enable conversations about environmental change – starting with a group of 5 young people and reaching across a school.
