Petone Beach rubbish clean-up, Wellington
Youth from Hutt Valley High School are exploring what it means to be active citizens – and giving back to the environment at the same time
Young women from Wellington are connecting global anti-pollution movements to action in their own back yard. The girls’ group has noticed that their beach often has rubbish littered over it, including trash blown from overfilling bins.
Three after school clean up sessions were planned by the 13 youth and leaders. Each time, a section of beach was be cleared of litter, and rubbish was responsibly recycled or disposed of. Bad weather postponed one of the after school events twice, but the team still cleared litter off 800m of beach.
In the process of being active citizens, the youth became further aware of how community actions impacted the environment. The local community also got to see them in action, and were impressed at their efforts to make the beach a better environment.
